How to Climb a Mountain/Hit Goals

The Mountain

From afar the mountain seems small.

We picture ourselves at the top before we ever take the first step.

I’m going to lose the weight.
Run the race.
Change my life.

We make a plan and head toward the mountain excited to begin.

Then we reach the base.

Suddenly the mountain feels bigger.

The climb looks steeper.

Excitement turns into doubt.

What was I thinking?
How does anyone do this?
Maybe I’m not built for this.

This is where most people turn around.

Not because they aren’t capable.

Because goals look very different from the base than they do from afar.

But some climbers have something others don’t.

A guide.

Someone who has walked the trail before.

Someone who knows where the steep sections are, when to slow down, and how to keep moving when the path gets hard.

A coach.

Right when doubt starts to win, they step in and quietly say:

“I got you.”

Not because they will carry you to the top.

Because they help you find the path when you lose sight of it.

The mountain doesn’t get smaller.

The climb doesn’t get easier.

You simply stop climbing alone.

And that changes everything.

Because no summit is reached in one giant leap.

It happens one step at a time.

One workout.

One meal.

One choice.

One hard day you refuse to quit.

Keep climbing.

The summit is waiting.
